Bachelor's Thesis and Degree Project
Through an exploratory design project on visual representations of sex and gender, Obskyr was created; a photo book intended to provoke reflection and open up for discussion.
Advertising and visual media have a significant influence on how social norms are established and transformed, while the visual representation of sex and gender tends to reinforce and reproduce harmful norms and stereotypes. While Obskyr does not offer a solution to this highly complex issue, the photobook rather serves as a critical design proposal that introduces thought-provoking ideas on how we might continue to engage with these kinds of questions. What is it that remains of a person when everything that enables them to be placed within predefined categories is no longer present, and what narrative would have taken place if my images contained clearly gendered individuals?
